Read! Learn! Succeed! is United Way of Franklin County’s early reading initiative. The future of our community rests on its people, especially the next generation. One place we can make a real difference is getting kids off to a good start in school, right from preschool. Like anything else, reading is easier to get right from the beginning. Working together we can make a real difference in getting kids off to a good start in school!
What’s at stake?
Reading in early grades predicts high school success and it helps to catch the problem early, before a child gets frustrated and gives up — it takes 12 years to make a graduate or a drop out. Kids who begin to fall behind in reading find it harder and harder to catch up each year and become increasingly frustrated. Research has shown that children who have early and frequent access to reading and books reach higher levels of education than those who do not. Early reading support is a simple, common sense solution but the stakes are high.
What’s the United Way doing?
In partnership with Greenfield Kiwanis Club and with help from Health New England, United Way of Franklin County facilitates a monthly story time in 21 preschool classrooms. At the end of the story time, each child receives a copy of that month’s book to take home and add to their library.
